    Hi,

I woke up this morning to see this error instead of my website.

I disabled the wordfence plugin via ftp whcih means my site works now, but am stumped as to what to do next. I dont want to re-install the wordfence plugin again mainly because I dont want to spend the time re-setting it up. It there a simple fix maybe? Or is a re-instal the simple fix?

    Thanks.

  • We have the same problem right now. Not sure what it is.

I was updating my sites yesterday afternoon. All the ones I updated before the last wordfence release are OK. The others have the same error.

Has there been any resolution to this?

    Oh oh, same prob here…
Fatal error: Uncaught wfWAFStorageFileConfigException: Error reading Wordfence Firewall config data, configuration file could be corrupted or inaccessible…

The newest release doesn’t seem to fix this either

Will they (Wordfence) put out some kind of alert so people know when it’s okay to use it again? Does anyone know?

I updated all the plugins, themes, and WordPress system, except for WordFence. Then disabled WFence and removed. Re-installed WFence and all seems to be fine now.

I did have an unsupported plugin (Easy Table) which I removed as well, don’t know if it had anything to do with this glitch.
    Good luck to you.

    Hi all,

This issue was fixed yesterday with the release of version 7.1.6. The issue occurred if your firewall configuration files were not readable — 7.1.6 should prevent the error message, but please see the additional details here, since this likely means the firewall on your site was not working correctly even before 7.1.5:

@mstutz: We haven’t heard of anyone else continuing to have the same issue after installing 7.1.6 — if your site has a PHP “opcache” you can try clearing it. (In rare cases, an opcache may hold outdated PHP files even after an update.) Otherwise, can you make a separate post, and include the exact error message you are still seeing? (The message may be somewhat different from above, including the line number where the problem occurs.)

I had the same problem today; both front and backend were inaccessible. I deleted the plugin via ftp and then things worked, re-installed the new version and the site is working again. I appreciate the update info here for helping me resolve the problem.

I have several other sites with the plugin installed, and they didn’t go down. I believe it might have been related to upgrading to WP 4.9.6 without upgrading the plugin but haven’t absolutely confirmed that.

We were not using the Firewall as we have a firewall, ids, and waf running over our multiple websites at our host. Is it not possible to run WordFence without the firewall anymore?

    Hi @mstutz

You should be able to disable the firewall from “Wordfence > Firewall > Firewall Options > Web Application Firewall Status”.

I would appreciate opening a new support thread for any other questions that aren’t related to the issue discussed in this thread.

    Thanks.
