Fatal Error (complete lockout) after plugin-updates

My Portolio website is the most valuable thing I own. After updating all plugins I have been locked out of wp-admin and the site itself is down too. I am met with the same error mesage on all pages:

Fatal error: Class ‘Twig_SimpleFunction’ not found in /var/www/joshuachronstedt.dk/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wpml-translation-management/classes/translation-proxy/class-wpml-jobs-fetch-log-ui.php on line 30

I dont know which version of WP im running.
Here is the complete list of plugins installed:

The backup is saved in my webhotel under /public_html/updraft_backups

I have tried clearing the cache in my browser.

Please help, my portfolio is so important to what I do.

Hi Joshua, I can totally understand how frustrating it must be. As there is a fatal error and the backend of the website is not accessible. You got to find out the hosting control panel login details or the FTP login details and rename the “wpml-translation-management” folder as an immediate step to bring back the site online. Because the error is coming from that plugin.

It looks like you need to disable this plugin… wpml-translation-management

You’ll want to navigate via FTP or your hosting control panel to the ‘plugins’ directory at your web host. Rename either the whole plugins or the wpml-translation-management directory under that and then try again to access the site.

First of all, I see that WPML is causing the error. Here is a thread with similar error: https://wpml.org/forums/topic/uncaught-error-twig_simplefunction-not-found/

You can deactivate the plugin without going into your WordPress dashboard. Here is how :

Thank you both very much. I “solved” it by figuring out how to upload the pre-updated versions of the plugins from ftp. Yes, your right WP can be very fickle. Wow that was nerve wrecking.

Do you have any advice on what steps I should take going forward? How to I prevent this in the future. The situation I’m in now is that I can’t update my plugins without the site going down. I actually don’t need the site to be multilingual anymore…

I can see I’m currently running WordPress 5.6.4, which I suspect is a very old version. And the browser says “not secure”. I recon I don’t really have the skills to actually maintain a WP site. How do I future-proof my site? Should I get a Squarespace or similar instead, and migrate the whole thing? What do you guys recommend?

@joshuaword You can use what we call a ‘managed hosting’. They take care of all the technical side for you. And are liable if you run into issues. I am not allowed to recommend a host here but you can go through the list of officially recommended hosting by wordpress.org.
