I’m having trouble uploading images to my WordPress website. I originally was WordPress 3.3 and would get the error below.

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 14272 bytes) in /home/toiihoco/public_html/wp-content/plugins/resize-image-after-upload/class.resize.php on line 179

I updated to WordPress 3.5.1 and the still fails to upload, but now the error message is a generic ‘An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.’, but I assume it’s the same problem as with WordPress 3.3.

The image I’m trying to upload is 9.6MB and the resolution is 3568 x 3942.

What is the allowed memory that I’m exhausting? Can we improve the error message for this please?

Please see this thread as it’s pretty similar:

You need to increase your PHP’s resource limits, in your case I think it’s the memory limit. Try asking your webhost to increase the PHP memory limit to something higher like 256MB or 512MB (or update it in htaccess or php.ini if you know how).

The reason you are receiving an error is that PHP requires a fair amount of RAM to perform an image resize operation, therefore if there isn’t enough allocated, then PHP will error out. The PHP default is something like 8MB, but yours looks to be around 64MB based on your error message.

Let me know if that helps,

That did work for me – thanks for the suggestion!
