Hello. I am trying to import an excel spreadsheet — 21MB, 165,000 rows — with Table Press and I got this error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 65506643 bytes) in /home2/jcgs/public_html/wp-content/plugins/tablepress/libraries/simplexlsx.class.php on line 744

Is this a Table Press error?? (It could be a Word Press Error, a web Hosting error (Hostgator), another error (my personal ISP?)?) I am starting with you.
I have done large tables — up to 50,000 rows — with now problem. But maybe this table is just too big?

Word Press, Table Press are both up to date.

    Thank you most kindly,
    Lesa Barnes, WAJCGS

    Hi,

thanks for your question, and sorry for the trouble.

This table is indeed very large already, and unfortunately the Excel importer is not the best when it comes to memory consumption.
I recommend to try again after saving the table to a CSV file in Excel. The CSV importer is much better with that memory consumption.

You might then be lucky that the table can be imported. Still, the table will probably be very slow, in the “Edit” screen in the admin area and maybe even on the frontend.

In addition, I recommend to make sure that the server uses a modern version of PHP, like PHP 7.2 or 7.3. This also has an influence on the memory consumption.

    Regards,
    Tobias

Thanks, Tobias. It appears the problem likely is my available PHP. I have only 7.1 and will have to wait until later this year for when my hosting service makes 7.2 available to my shared-server plan. Table Press is an AWESOME app. Thank you.

    Hi,

no, your version of PHP is not the problem here. This should work with PHP 7.1 as well (I just didn’t mention it above, because PHP 7.2 and 7.3 are already newer 🙂 ).
I would recommend to try the CSV import for this table then!

    Regards,
    Tobias
