• I clicked on the “Please upgrade to 2.8” link in the admin panel and now I cannot reach my website and the admin panel.

    It says :

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare wp_clone() (previously declared in /www/wp-settings.php:283) in /www/wp-includes/functions.php on line 2908

Does someone know how to fix this ??

Please help me, I am so scared that I have to do all over again…

  • EXACT same problem is happening to me. I’m glad the moderator had zero problems installing 2.8 but does anyone have a fix for this other then disabling your plugins(which didnt work)

if you are getting messages saying ‘cannot redeclare …..’

you need to post the entire error message — and actually read it.

without that, its pretty hard to help.

if, on the other hand, you are seeing EXACTLY this,

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare wp_clone() (previously declared in /www/wp-settings.php:283) in /www/wp-includes/functions.php on line 2908

.. then you need to make sure that your wp-includes/functions.php file is being changed.

In 2.7.x that function was defined inside wp-includes/functions.php

its been moved in 2.8 to wp-settings.php so that its set before the cache is loaded.

Until you have the NEW functions.php, you will get that error.

and I dont give a crap how many times you tell me youve uploaded the new files — you have not done it right if you refresh your browser and still get that error.

whooami: finally some clever and useful answer (would have expected it from an admin though..) Thanks anyway!

I had exactly the following error:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare wp_clone() (previously declared in /www/wp-settings.php:283) in /www/wp-includes/functions.php on line 2908

Indeed I downloaded the .zip for version 2.8 and compared my folder online on the server, most of the file dates were not the same, as if the automated upgrade started but finished somewhere before it should.

So I manually uploaded the 2.8 files, replacing everything on the server except the folder wp-content and the wp-config.php file then opened the admin page in a browser. WP asked to upgrade the database, which went fine. Then I could finally login to the dashboard.

I had the “An automated WordPress update has failed to complete..” message but the upgarde page said that I was running 2.8 so no upgrade necessary. I deleted the .maintenance file in the wordpress ‘root’ folder and it disapeared.

I have been using Dreamweaver to edit, but IT would be nice to do it all in WordPress, but oh well. I think I have given up on the WordPress editor. Maybe in the next update it will be fixed? Guess I have learned my lesson as many have in the need to backup WordPress 2.7 files the hard way. Although it might be kind of WordPress to put 7.0 back up to download, for those of looking for salvation from the dreaded 8.0 problems.

I had this problem not realizing the pimio folder in wp-includes was not fully uploaded. That said, I cannot upgrade to 2.8 no matter what I do since the redirect to blogs isn’t working at all.
