 * Went for the automatic update to 4.2.2 and it failed.
 * I am now getting the message:
 * Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_json_encode() in /home/cream01/public_html/
   wp-admin/includes/misc.php on line 668
if I attempt to log in to to the dashboard
and a nasty little line on the base of every page which says: Fatal error: Call
to undefined function get_avatar_url() in /home/cream01/public_html/wp-includes/
   pluggable.php on line 2221.
 * Any thoughts?

 * try **MANUAL** updating. Download a fresh copy of the WordPress .zip file to
your computer, unzip it, and use that to copy up all files and folders EXCEPT
the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory. You may need to delete
the old copies of files & folder on your server before uploading the new ones.
   Read the [Manual Update ](http://codex.wordpress.org/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update)
   directions first.
    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php – **
If you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database)
before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong.**
 * In case you are upgrading much older version, then try reviewing this codex first:

 * Thanks for that Tara. Very speedy.
 * Sadly, since I can’t get at the WP dashboard for the nice easy export option,
backing up everything is quite a chore. However, it would appear to be the only
   way. Ho Hum!
 * Cautionary note to self is not to allow auto-updates but go in and export back
up files first. It all felt rather too easy!
