Fantastic Metropolis – WP-powered webzine

  • Hi folks,

    I recently moved a literary webzine I help edit to WordPress, and I thought you’d like to see another example of WordPress being used for sites other than blogs. I’m still adjusting the design, so if you have any feedback, it’s more than welcome.

  • I love the look! I’m currently working on integrating WordPress for my local ski club site. Are you using a lot of static pages or is it plugins that are behind the scenes? How are you getting the images and background images in your posts?

    Thanks. There are no static pages on the site, everything is stored in the database, although I’m using the Staticize plugin to cut down on unnecessary database access. Post thumbnails are named after $post->post_name, so it’s very easy to modify your template to include them. Here’s a sample function:

    function post_thumbnail() {
    global $post;

    $ptExtensions = array('jpg', 'png');
    $ptPath = ABSPATH . 'wp-content/post-thumbnails/';
    $ptURI = get_settings('siteurl') . '/wp-content/post-thumbnails/';

    foreach ($ptExtensions as $e) {
    if (file_exists($ptPath . $post->post_name . '.' . $e)) {
    echo '<a href="';
    the_permalink();
    echo '" title="Read “';
    the_title();
    echo '”"><img src="' . $ptURI . $post->post_name . '.' . $e . '" alt="';
    the_title();
    echo '" /></a>';
    break;
    }
    }
    } //end post_thumbnail()

    *Very* nice site, Goblin. Love the look. And the content.
