Support » Fixing WordPress » Failed to upgrade to WP 4.5, resulting a 500 server error

  • Resolved sliderbl

24 hours ago I tried to upgrade wordpress as usual in the admin panel. It takes for a while and stop with the word “updating” without further progress.
So I reloaded the page, and since then I cannot access to all of my site content, including the admin panel.
All pages appear in a “500 server error”.
I tried some methods like deactivating wp-content/plugin or removing .maintenance file via FTP, but these didn’t work.
And I cannot replace the WordPress zip via FTP (some unknown errors).

    My site is
    Really frustrated.
Thank you very much for you help.

  • There may be a permissions issue that needs to be fixed.

Out of curiosity, who is your host?

My web hosting is, and I host the wordpress site myself by its built-it services.

Moreover, I should have said that “only admin pages have the 500 server errors”. And content pages became like this:

    Not Found
The requested URL was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Could I know what should I do or where to seek help? Really grateful.

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, you are in the right place to get help but personally I am stumped.

Only thing I can think of is something got added to the htaccess file. Would you please share the contents of the htaccess file with us?

Thank you very much for your reply.
My WordPress is located at the htdocs/ file, and now its htaccess is:

    php_value display_errors Off
    php_flag magic_quotes 1
    php_flag magic_quotes_gpc 1
    php_value mbstring.http_input auto
    php_value date.timezone America/New_York

I found the backup two months ago, the htaccess is written like this:

    # BEGIN WordPress
    <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /
    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ – [L]
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    # END WordPress

And I see a htaccess before the htdocs folder (i.e. in the index):

    ErrorDocument 404 /notfound.html
    ErrorDocument 403 /notfound.html
    ErrorDocument 500 /notfound.html

Though I am not sure if this one matters. And the last modified date was in 2014.

    Thank you.

It seems that I have resolved the problems. My site works now.
Thank you for inspiring me of the htaccess file.

Do you know what you did to fix the problem? If so, could you please share with us because others seem to be having similar issues after updating. Thank you.

Please tell me how you resolved. Same happened here, hosted with Pair.

Sorry I haven’t noticed this post past few days.
I re-uploaded the wp-includes and wp-admin with the newest update manually via ftp, and also the wp-settings.php in the root. After that I can access to the admin panel, and finally reset the Settings/Permalinks.
