    Hello there,

    I have a query regarding failed payments/orders.

Two failed orders I have mention that the customers tried to pay “via cards.”

Question: What does “via cards” mean? Usually I see “via Visa debit card” or “via Mastercard debit card”.

I know that two of these orders are very suspicious because they include a notes like this “XnpxOWxSEu0YrvChzdVDQGVLJeqbf7Y9” AND “RE167TmOfzfuTiRXvetQEEHQnQ7lBN12”.

But I did also notice a failed payment “via cards” from a customer before they retried and placed a successful order.

Question: Could some of these be legit customers that need me to reach out to help them?

I did read somewhere that maybe this is a case of a legit customer trying to pay via a different payment method I don’t currently provide.

Note: I have already contacted Stripe on this matter and they have directed me towards woocommerce support.

Note: I am just trying to double check and learn a thing or two here. I love how secure the woocommerce plugin is in this case.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Hi @mmk175 ,

Thanks so much for getting in touch and sharing your concerns about the failed payments and those unusual order notes — I can see how that might feel a bit confusing.

When you see something like “via cards” in the order notes, that usually refers to a payment attempt made with a debit or credit card using a gateway like Stripe or WooPayments. If the payment didn’t progress far enough to identify the card brand (like Visa or Mastercard), WooCommerce may just label it as “via cards” by default.

Now, those long strings of characters you’re seeing, like “XnpxOWxSEu0YrvChzdVDQGVLJeqbf7Y9,” definitely look like randomly generated tokens. That could point to automated bot traffic or even attempted fraudulent orders. One good next step would be to consider adding protection at the checkout:

    • Add CAPTCHA – Including a CAPTCHA on your checkout page can help block bots from spamming your store with fake payment attempts.
    • Use anti-fraud tools – Plugins like WooCommerce Anti-Fraud are great at monitoring for suspicious behavior and can even hold or block orders that look risky.

That said, not every failed payment is necessarily suspicious. Some of those could be real customers running into common issues like:

    • Entering the wrong card details
    • Having insufficient funds
    • Or having their bank flag the transaction for security reasons

I hope this helps clear things!
