Extra copy of backups saved on server against my will

    Hi there,

    I have my Updraft Plus remote backup set to Google Drive. However, each time I back up my site, it seems like an extra copy of the backup is saved to my server (Bigscoots), taking up tons of storage space.

    I have double-checked: the backups always appear on my Google Drive, which has plenty of space available (over 75 GB of free space), and I also have “Delete local backup” checked in my settings.

    But for some reason, an extra copy of my backups is still being saved on my Bigscoots server every time, causing me to go over my Bigscoots storage limit twice.

    Bigscoots isn’t happy about this — it goes against their TOS and they’ve had to delete Updraft Plus from my site twice to free up space.

    Please could you help me out – why is there an extra copy of the backups saved to my server, even when all my settings don’t allow it to?

    Is this happening on every single backup? I’m seeing this behavior sporadically with no indication in the backup log as to why.

    I just double-checked and you’re right, it’s happening sporadically rather than every time. But I’ve been contacted by Bigscoots twice already as they’re very unhappy about these backups ending up on their server space… Not sure why it’s happening!

    Good to know someone else is in the same boat. Did this just start happening recently? I think I noticed it within the past couple weeks on my sites.

    For me it started happening about 2 months ago. At least once last month and once this month. I even updated my WordPress and the plugin to the latest versions and it didn’t seem to help. Hopefully someone from the Updraft team will see this and help us out.

    I use the premium version and have a ticket open with them about it. We’ll see if anything comes of it.

    No I was just testing and noticed my UpdraftPlus throws so errors if that plugin exists – but it didn’t change the issue.

    Would be able to share a copy of the backup log please?
    This can be found in the UpdraftPlus Existing Backups tab.
    The contents will be too long to post here directly, but you can use an online service such as Dropbox or Pastebin, and post the link here.

    Hi,

    Apologies for the late reply.

    Can you please check if the “Delete local backup” option is enabled?

    Go to UpdraftPlus > Settings > check Delete local backups option and click Save change button.

    Yes, “Delete local backup” has always been enabled, even before this problem has started.

    If any of the backups were created before the retention limit was set then they will not be counted towards your retention limit. Can you delete the oldest 11 file backups and run a new backup. Your current retention limits are 2 for files and 10 for DB and you currently have 13 files and 1 DB. The next backup should then trigger the files to pruned.
    You will need to manually remove any backups that are created before the retention limit was set.
