    Hi,

    In testing this website for WCAG Level A compliance, I received error messages regarding external links that were added. Upon checking, I could NOT access the actual HTML code as this is now totally controlled by your page builder plugin.

    Here are the violations-
    Ensure links or controls that open new windows or frames do not open without a warning
    Severity: 6

    Developers should avoid creating links or other controls opening new windows without either indicating that fact to users or allowing them to control the focus change. Exceptions are made if the new window comes in the form of a dialog, one that is either predictable by its context (such as a “Print this page” link that triggers the browser’s Print dialog), or is implemented in an accessible manner (such as a “Delete” image link that triggers a simple JavaScript alert with an “Are you sure you want to delete this?” prompt).
    Violations Identified (3)

    The links are to social media accounts.

    Please advise?

    Thank you in advance,
    Trish

    Hi Trish

    Thanks for reaching out.

    At Customize > Theme Settings > Header > Edit Widget in the Design and Layout section you can disable the Open in a new window setting. That would then make the header social icons the same your icons near the bottom of the page, opening in the same window.

    Is there any other way to do this?

    The theme is causing errors and I cannot access the Customize option.

    Please, let us know the details of the errors.

    @misplon Hi Andrew,

    Could I bother you to go to: https://www.webaccessibility.com/ and drop the URL into their textbox and click on the test button?

    There are several violations that IF they are from the pagebuilder, then I’m sure you and I can solve them. The one in particular I am not sure if it is being caused by the theme or the page builder. That one is as follows:

    Ensure containing elements allow text resize without loss of functionality.
    Severity: 3

    Developers must use relative sizing to ensure that text including form field text and text containers resize appropriately. When absolute sizing is used to size and position elements on the page, content and other elements do not scale correctly or scale at all when the text size is adjusted. Users with low vision and users with cognitive impairments benefit from increased text size and space between elements.

    Developers must ensure that text can be resized up to 200% without assistive technology.

    On mobile platforms with limited screen space browsers offer pinch zoom features allowing users to enlarge or shrink the page to read text. Developers should not disable these features to allow low vision users to use the feature to enlarge text.
    Violations Identified (1)

    <meta content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, user-scalable=no" name="viewport">

    Just don’t want to copy and paste them all here as the website URL is clearly stated in all of the other violations. You know, so developers will know exactly what is causing these issues.

    Thanks,
    Trish

    Hi Trish

    You mentioned that you couldn’t access the Customizer, that’s something we can assist with right away. Is that still the case? Are you unable to access Appearance > Customize > Header?

    (@misplon)

    If you aren’t able to access the Customizer, please, describe what you’re seeing when clicking on Appearance > Customize, thanks.

    @misplon Hi Andrew,

    I take it that violation is due to the page builder then?

    I discovered the theme has errors and needs replacing, and the developer has deserted his master piece. It is not as simply as changing the theme, as I am sure you are aware. Just wanted to know to use the page builder… or not.

    Thanks,
    Trish

    Hi Trish

    Thanks for your reply.

    We usually try to work on one issue at a time.

    You mentioned that there is an accessibility warning due to the top bar social icons opening in a new window. The simplest way to resolve that would be to edit the widget via the Customizer and disable the Open in a new window setting. When trying to access the Customizer you mentioned: “The theme is causing errors and I cannot access the Customize option.” If you can’t access the Customizer it isn’t due to accessibility issues. Are you seeing a white screen when going to Appearance > Customize? If you can describe to us the issue you’re facing when going to Appearance > Customize we can help to troubleshoot and resolve the primary issue raised in this support thread “External Links Added Open In New Tab NOT WCAG Level A Compliant”.

    I can reply to the other items raised but the support thread then becomes quite challenging to follow:

    Font sizing
    Developers must use relative sizing to ensure that text including form field text and text containers resize appropriately.

    It depends on where the font size is being set, for the most part, the theme is setting the font size. Page Builder does have font size settings in various widgets, you can choose em or rem or % as the font value setting in those instances which would make those relatively sized units.

    Viewport
    <meta content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, user-scalable=no" name="viewport">

    Page Builder doesn’t set the viewport, that’s done by your theme.

    When I initially glanced at your site I mistook your theme for another theme so my instructions for going to the Customizer to adjust the Open in a new window for the social icon links weren’t correct. Can you perhaps confirm, at Appearance > Themes, is your activated theme called Off The Shelf? If so, I think this is the product page for your theme. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the documentation is public-facing so I can’t look up for you where the social link target (open in new window or not) is controlled.

    Here is a summary from the site checker sent previously, hopefully, this helps:

    Ensure links or controls that open new windows or frames do not open without a warning
    Theme

    Ensure containing elements allow text resize without loss of functionality.
    Theme

    Ensure markup documents contain well-formed elements
    Page Builder

    Avoid use of placeholder values to label or explain input
    Theme

    Ensure ARIA regions, landmarks and HTML sections are identifiable

    @misplon Hi Andrew,

    You are a GEM mister… and THANK YOU for pointing this out. Yes, you are correct about the name of the theme. And, the developer announced his deserting the theme when I requested help, on the same day I posted this ticket.

    Have let the website owner know that a total rebuild needs to be done a.s.a.p. as I’m not sure how much longer the site will even be functional, given the errors.

    Thanks HEAPS! Your help has been much appreciated.

    Plugin Author Andrew Misplon

    (@misplon)

    Sure, no problem.

    Unfortunately, I noticed the “not compatible with PHP 5” notice on the ThemeForest theme page.

    All errors are solvable, it just depends on your available resources and programming background. If there isn’t a lot of content nested within the theme functionality then switching themes might not be a massive task.

    All the best with your project 🙂
