 * Is it possible to set a product up as an external link so when clicked from the
   listing page it opens a new tab and goes to a custom URL instead of a single 
   product page?

 * Yes it is possible with affiliate mode. You can switch to affiliate mode in the
   catalog general settings.
 * You will also need the Affiliate Mode Options extension to go directly to the
