 * I followed the “External Databases & Third Party Services” guide in your documentation
   which is a great feature for mirroring.
 * I wondered if there’s a way to use the external db for logging _exclusively_ 
   to prevent db bloating on my wp install. In other words I’d like to store the
   data externally only instead of merely copying it for redundancy.

 * You can use the external database feature instead of the mirroring to store the
   logs in an external database. Refer to this: [storing the activity logs in an external database](https://wpactivitylog.com/support/kb/store-wordpress-activity-log-external-database/).
