Support » Fixing WordPress » Exporting between WP builds

  • I searched for an answer to this question but couldn’t really find anything. Apologies if I missed something!

I have a copy of WordPress 1.5 running on my site already but decided to start afresh with a clean install. I’ve installed and heavily customised a new copy of WordPress 1.5 on the same server and now want to move my posts and comments over to the new database.

However, as the original install was upgraded somewhere along the line, some of the database fields are different to the ones in the new install, despite the fact that I upgraded it to the latest build. The orders of some of the fields in the database are different too.

This makes it impossible to simply export the data into the new database (wp_comments, wp_post2cat and wp_posts are the only ones I need to move) so I was wondering if there’s an easier way? I know there are import scripts for importing from B2, Greymatter, MT, etc. but are there any for importing from WordPress into WordPress?

I hope this makes sense. 🙂

Upgrade the stuff you are moving before you move it.

I did upgrade(see above) but it didn’t change the structure of the database; I assume it doesn’t matter to the script which order the fields are in. HOWEVER, I think I’ve actually figured it out for myself after all that. Always the case.

Just in case anyone else is having the same problem: checking the “Complete inserts” box in phpMyAdmin before taking the data dump seems to include the field names in the dump. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that before. Sorry!
