[resolved] Export Posts by Author- Featured Image reference (8 posts)

When using Tools>Export, targeting a specific author, the resulting XML file does not contain a reference/link to any Featured Image (thumbnail) associated with these posts.

On the other hand, Tools>Export "all content" (including all authors) produces an XML file that does contain reference/link to Featured Image.

Request: Have Tools>Export "specific author" generate the same metadata as the "all content" export, so that Export "specific author" will also include metadata reference to the Featured Image.

Many people (including myself) use "specific author" as a way to export some, but not all, posts. Full metadata would really help. Thanks. --Bill

ditto here on this stinks - featured image not being part of export that is ... ugh ...

(The problem of "Author specific full metadata" is still not solved, but I wanted to mention my preferred way of transferring a WP install to a new installation)

Since my original post, I now use this approach with complete success, from Webdesignerwall.com, plus one additional step:

Additional step: copy the entire wp-content/uploads directory for the source WP installation (the install you are exporting from).

So after the tutorial steps and copying the Uploads folder, you have your site (in the exported database, see tutorial), and the images used in the source WP installation (the Uploads folder).

Now when you want to import your whole site to a new installation, follow the tutorial steps to bring in the database, and replace the target (new) WP installation Uploads folder with your saved Uploads folder from the source WP install.

thank you for the link and heads up ... and here is hoping some future issue of WP will solve this author specific / custom-post specific export-import option :>) ... cordially, chuck scott

just an fyi, i was having issue with exports-imports as it pertained to Featured Image for custom post type per the Promotions Slider plugin by Woodent and you can read that thread here ->

and his plugin is here -> http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/promotion-slider/

in the end, his plugin allows the Featured Image to be over-written by using custom CDN url and when i export just his custom post type (promotions) then the url stays with the post data on import ... and as stated in that thread (and as bill mentions here), if i export "all content" then yes, featured image will make the export-import road trip ... but as i pointed out in my post over there, i'm working on one domain with several sub site domains as part of Multisite network thus was looking for easy way to copy the custom post type settings and posts from one subsite to another hence the desire for a better export tool that allows for metadata like featured image and/or author but i digress ...

as to username, thanks for kudos ... at some point i hope to loop back to my own blog with upgrade to WP 3.1.2 and some of these cool plugins but you can read the story behind the username and blog here ->

    cheers - chuck scott
