Support » Fixing WordPress » Export or download contents of media library?

  • Is there a way to export just the media library to a new installation? I exported the other content fine, but the attachment option failed.

This is a migration from my localhost to a live site at (which is 3.1).

Barring the ability to export it, how would I download the entire content of the library so I can upload it manually?

    Thanks, all- David

  • To export not really. You should be able to go to your localhost root folder, select your wordpress installiation folder, and select wp-content. Copy this entire folder to your desktop. Then right click it and send to compressed folder.

In your internet browser, go to

Click file manager, Choose the default root,
Navigate to where you installed wordpress and click upload(make sure you have no files on the wp-content folder on server). Choose the zip “wp-content” folder from the desktop and climc select file Upon upload completion click return to file manager. Then click the compressed “wp-content” folder and click extract above. When asked if you want to overwrite the existing folder, click yes.

    All done.

But what happens when the site is hosted at I don’t have access to the server.

I’m having the same issue. I have a large site at, trying to move it to a self hosted version of WP. The media gallery is huge, and trying to download them through the import process times out.
