 * so one step says export database to a file. If I do this will the source database
   be deleted or is the export version just a copy. these experts fail to mention
   the fine points…
 * Learning to upload localhost to webserver and wanting to modify file paths so
   that the [http://localhost](http://localhost) is replaced by the [http://mysite](http://mysite)
   phrase.

 * No, the exported version is just a copy.
 * With that said, it will be easier to modify those paths later with [https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-search-replace/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/better-search-replace/)
   so you only have to be worried about the WordPress and Site Addresses at Settings-
   > General in your Dashboard (aka the `siteurl` and `home` values in the `_options`
   table).

 * Another approach is to use the plugin “DUPLICATOR”, among other things it fixes
   all the changes of URL throughout the database. Please be aware that it is not
   just a matter of text search/replace upon the database entries, many entries 
   have structured fields that code the length of the strings, ignoring this leads
   to pain.
