Expanding on the quicktags.js file’s buttons

I have a client who is hoping to use a wp blog for his bridge articles. So far, I’ve set up quicktag buttons for the card suit icons, and various tabled displays for hands, bidding, etc. The single remaining problem is that while he is relatively computer-savvy, and therefore can figure out where to place the card numbers and text entry in the table structure, it’s dollars to doughnuts that many of his editors will not be able to do this with any sort of facility.

There’s a   hard-coded into each table just before the text entry area (where the card numbers and such go). What I think I need is some way to highlight in some color (yellow probably) that   so that the editors will immediately see where to enter their text and numbers.

I’m looking for either someone who can explain how I can code this in js; or someone who knows where to send me to find out. It’s another case of not knowing the question to give the SEs, y’know?
