[resolved] Existing WP blog inside a new WP site? (9 posts)

Hey, All. Apologies if this is redundant or if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

I'm rebuilding my current site into a wordpress site (Responsive theme) and would like to somehow get my current existing WordPress blog inside of my new WordPress site build.

Both the new site build, the existing site, and the blog all live on the same server, so I'm hoping that makes things easier. But can someone direct me to where I might be instructed how to get the pre-existing blog content over into this interior blog on the new site?

    Thanks so much!

  2. Are you doing this with Multisite, or do you just want two blogs?

Well, I guess I would love to have the archives and categories of the existing blog, while still having it comply with the theme and the css of the new site I'm building. I want the blog to look like it belongs to the parent site, but I guess I would like to keep the blog content on its own, if that makes sense.

I'm not sure if that requires two blogs or multisite.

  4. Why are you making this into two sites, I guess, is my real question...

Your 'current' site is also WordPress, so you sound like you're just talking about a new theme.

Basically, I wanted to keep my blog content separate from my site content while still sharing the same custom child theme I am building. Although, I guess I don't necessarily need to keep my content separate. If not, can you direct me to some instructions on transferring my existing blog content over to my new WordPress site?

  6. Separating content is a good reason :) I split one site into two (personal and technical) for that reason. Just wanted to make sure you have a good reason for it!

The easiest way is keep your current site and activate multisite.

Make a subsite and set it up (don't worry about content yet).

Now on your main site (the first one), export the posts you want on the new site. You can do this by category to make it easier.

Import them into the new site.

    Delete from the old site.

    Great! Thanks for the help.
Not that I need any hand-holding, but will just searching for "how to make a subsite" on this multisite forum meet my purpose, or is there anything specific that I will need to know?

    Thanks again!

  8. There's nothing really specific. You go into network admin and click on 'create a site' :)

It's as easy as making a new user.
