Excluding Children Categories (2 posts)

Hi guys, i'm developing a site powered by wp, and i've run into some sort of trouble when i try to display the categories, i would like to hide the children categories, from its parent. I know that it can be done manually, excluding the category number, but that would kinda break the auto functionality of wp cause each time a new cat is added, ill have to go to the php and edit the file to hide the new children.

So, any ideas you guys have, or a plugin to achieve this, or maybe including it to wordpress, i would gladly appreciate it :D

    Thanks in advance!

Is this for displaying posts under category queries, or the category list in say your sidebar?

If the former, here's a plugin solution:

If the latter, it may be possible to hack something that would dynamically hide child categories. But it would help to know more on what the expected results are.
