Exclude past event categories from wp_list_categories

Hi,

Is there a way to exclude past event categories when using wp_list_categories?

Past event categories are still showing in the wp_list_categories output, even with hide_empty set to true. If a user clicks on one of these categories there are no events to display.

I guess strictly speaking, past events are still ‘published’ so that’s why they’re showing up in the output. Setting them to draft isn’t really an option for me as I need to display past events in another area of the site.
