Support » Fixing WordPress » Excerpt – punctuation being and even full words being stripped

  • I post a lot of movie reviews to my blog and so I use the Excerpt field to add a short synopsis for each view. I recently changed my theme and now the excerpts are:

    1. cutting off the punctuation / final words at the end of the excerpt (example; the word “WHOA” is missing);
    2. cutting off pieces of HTML tags that previously displayed in full (example);
    3. or aren’t showing up at all (example)

    Because I use the actual Excerpt field and don’t rely on WordPress to create an excerpt from the body of my post, I’m not sure why it would be arbitrarily cutting off (or not displaying) pieces of the officially designated excerpt, especially when it has dispalyed fine in the past. Again, I have recently changed my theme but I don’t think there’s anything it that should, in theory, cause this problem.

    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • Well, have you tried disabling the theme and seeing if that helps? If it does, it’s probably the code cutting off the excerpt.

    Yes, as I said, it displayed fine in the past with other themes. So while it’s definitely something to do with this theme, there doesn’t look to be anything weird in the code that would cause that. `
    <div class=”post_content”>
    <div class=”inner”>
    <h3>< a href=”<?php the_permalink() ?>”><?php the_title(); ?></ a></h3>
    <?php the_excerpt() ?>
    </div> `
    There’s nothing odd or complicated in the snippet where it appears, so I’m at a loss. (The gap between the < and the “a” for the link is because it wasn’t showing up properly in this post; it’s coded properly in the theme.)

    So, weirdly enough, even if I create a template file that is stripped completely bare and includes nothing except html, head, and body tags, the excerpt still gets truncated even though there can’t possibly be any other code in conflict with it.
