Support » Fixing WordPress » Excerpt option unavailable in Screen Options even after adding php function

  • Excerpt option is unavailable in Screen Options even after adding php function to the functions.php file.

    “add_post_type_support( ‘page’, ‘excerpt’ );”

    I added the code successfully, but the excerpt option is still not showing up.

    I have the following plugins installed. Not sure if they would cause this problem.

    I just checked with Twentytwelve and you’re right, there is no excerpt field on pages.

    This adds it

    function make_excerpt() {
            add_post_type_support( 'page', array( 'excerpt' ) );
    }
    add_action( 'after_setup_theme', 'make_excerpt' );

    @howdy_mcgee, you used the wrong hook.

    @sterndata

    I wasn’t using 2012, I was using 2015. But I also tried 2016, and 2017. let me give this a shot. I hadn’t seen this code anywhere online.

    @sterndata, @howdy_mcgee

    This issue was fixed by replacing the “typographers” quotes in the code I had copied with the correct quotes.

    See the difference between the two?

    add_post_type_support( ‘page’, ‘excerpt’ );
    add_post_type_support( ‘page’, ‘excerpt’);

    That was the issue all along.

    So, cogitating about this last night, I realized that because pages are not aggregated like posts (on a blog or other archive page), there’s really no need for a specific excerpt. The excerpt functions will grab the first some-number of words from the page’s content to make an excerpt if needed.

    The code above creates the ability to have a specific excerpt.

    @sterndata, @howdy_mcgee

    Actually, that was not the answer Steven. I just realized that the real problem was that I this snippet of code as using the wrong kinds of quotes around Page and Excerpt. That’s why it didn’t work on any theme. I had copied the code form a website where whoever shared it was using “typographers” single quotes which don’t work in php. 🙁

    See the difference between the two?

    add_post_type_support( ‘page’, ‘excerpt’ );
    add_post_type_support( ‘page’, ‘excerpt’);

    That was the issue all along.

    @sterndata, @howdy_mcgee

    Here’s the sad news…

    Now that the excerpt field is showing up, it’s not working. I’ve added a custom excerpt, but my site is still displaying the default excerpt of the first two sentences. And idea how I can force it to use my custom excerpt?

    Now that my excerpt field shows up, but is not actually changing the excerpt I’ve just decided to create a new custom field all-together. I can at least display the results of my custom excerpt field on my website. However, since I’m using this custom excerpt field now, I would like to just delete the excerpt functionality from WordPress all-together. I can just use the custom excerpt field created with another plugin, and I can use Yoast to create excerpts for use by search engines. So, does anyone know how to disable excerpts from being auto-generated by wordpress?

    just a quick thank you to @howdy_mcgee 🙂

    your solution suggested above worked like a charm for me;
    cheers a ton! LX
