That is coming from your theme, not the plugin. The plugin simply uses the excerpt format, however your theme is built to support excerpts. See here on my local environment; here is the shortcode:

    …and here is the result:

As you can see, there is an ellipsis (…) and a “(read more)” link after every excerpt. This is something you need to contact the developer of your theme about. The only thing I could suggest other than that would be to manually edit your post excerpts (go into the screen options tab at the top of your edit post page, and check the Excerpt box) and include a manual read more link in each excerpt you write.

    Hi Chris,

    Thanks for your response.

I contacted the theme author and he suggested the manual excerpt as well.

OK, no problem. So I went to do this, but there is no excerpt checkbox in the screen options tab.

Is this something controlled by your plugin or by the theme?

I was going to attach a screenshot, but apparently I cannot upload files. I can email it to you if you want to see it.

    Thanks,

You’ll only see it on the Add New/Edit Post screen: https://cloudup.com/c4omhgTXJmv

I turned it on in the post screen options, but the excerpt field still does not show up in the book review posts editing area.

I’m sorry to be so much trouble.

Book reviews don’t support the post excerpt functionality (which is kind of silly because they use excerpts, but usually themes don’t truncate those excerpts the way yours is doing). What you can do is use the Read More functionality to craft your excerpts. In this case, you’d write the text that you want to display in the excerpt, hit that button, and then all the text after the break is only visible when you go into the review.

I’ve created a ticket for this so the next time I update the plugin it will get added in but I don’t know when that will be.

Yeah, that doesn’t work. We tried that early on and my theme developer says, “the Smartline design does not support an automatic ellipsis and read more link after the excerpt as other themes. The reason is that our theme does include a read more button for the excerpt page template and do not add a read more link directly to the excerpt. You can add a manual excerpt as suggested from the developer: http://themezee.com/docs/excerpts/”

So neither manual method appears to work. Any other tricks up your sleeve? 🙂

No tricks, other than making the manual way work by changing the code. But if I get a chance this weekend while I’m at WordCamp SF, I’ll make the change and submit an update to the plugin so you can edit the excerpts manually.

That would be amazing. Thank you.

I’m pushing a 1.4.12 update today that will add excerpt support. Once you update, you should see the Excerpt checkbox available in the Screen Options tab for Book Reviews. From there you should be able to craft your excerpts so they don’t cut off. 🙂

It works!!! Thank you so much! You’re the best!
