  • This is a remarkable plugin, with excellent features and functionality. The developer also is very responsive.

There is also a lengthy troubleshooting section on his website, and I believe that on his forum the developer may go further in depth doing troubleshooting.

That said, in my experience it has been finicky, usually working great, but sometimes erroring. The developer pointed me to the FAQ, and suggested some standard plugin troubleshooting steps. But the problem is that I don’t always want to slog through a series of troubleshooting steps every time I run into something, nor do I want to stop using a plugin that I like because this one has a problem with it. So I may stop using it (even though I’m a developer and can handle complex troubleshooting).

My impression is that it’s doing a lot of complex awesome things, so it’s more high-maintenance than other plugins. As such, it may not appeal to the set-it-and-forget it crowd.

And I’m guessing that he’ll reply here in a very friendly way, telling me just how mistaken I am. 😉

    Hi Dave,

Thank you for taking the time to write a thoughtful review. It’s much appreciated. 🙂

I’m sorry to hear you had continuing issues with the plugin, and that you felt it was finicky. It shouldn’t be finicky…that likely indicates a technical issue, as the plugin is designed to be very low-maintenance and is stable unless there is a conflict or configuration issue that prevents it from working. (In almost all reported cases like this, we end up helping the user diagnose a previously unknown issue on their site that will sooner or later affect other plugins and apps. If there ends up being a legitimate issue with the plugin, we work hard to fix it quickly, and in most cases have a patch out in less than a day.)

Please remember that we are here to help. If you would like, take a moment to submit a support request at the WP-SpamShield Support Form (which is the main support venue for the plugin), and we’ll be more than happy to help you get it taken care of once and for all, so you don’t need to continually diagnose anything. We do have a very thorough and accurate diagnosis process. Almost all technical issues are able to be resolved within a day, and in many cases sooner. The vast majority of users have a trouble-free experience, and we’d like to help you have that as well. Take care!

I agree with flamenco. I am getting a momentary blank screen between page loads on two different sites that only happen when this plugin is activated and am dreading what it would take to possibly keep this plugin enabled if it has a tendency to conflict with other popular plugins. My haunch at this point is that it’s just too computationally intensive on each HTTP request.

    Hi hzc,

That’s a tech support issue. Trust me, there is nothing computationally intensive on each page load…that simply doesn’t line up with the facts of how the plugin works. We have done extensive testing on the plugin and it is optimized for speed. We’ve done benchmarking on the plugin to back this up.

In every case of something like that being reported to us, it’s been due to a configuration issue, low memory, old PHP versions, or other conflicts. These can easily be diagnosed and fixed so please submit a support request at the WP-SpamShield Support Form, and we’ll get you taken care of.
