• Is it okay to download a theme and play with it – adding/removing stuff, changing colours, etc, but keeping the same basic idea there? Or is this going to get me in trouble?

If I can do the above, what about the credit? Many themes have a footer saying “theme by…” – I figured I should change that to something like “theme based on…” or “theme modified from…” – would that be okay?

  • Unless the theme explicitly says otherwise (I’d be surprised if any do that you can download freely) you can do anything you want to it. Anything at all.

Leaving a credit to the orginal author is always nice though and what you suggest, while entirely voluntary, is a decent thing 🙂

Selling a theme based on someone else’s work is a different question with a different answer

No intention of selling anything, so your answer is exactly what I was hoping to hear – thanks 🙂
