Accessing your posts sitemap, I see an internal server error. How many posts do you have on your site in total? You might be running into a memory limit…

Do you have access to log files?

    Hi RavanH,
In total on the site we have over 20,000 posts.
I do have access to the log files, what would you suggest I do next to solve this problem?

You could take a look at the log files to see if you have memory related messages there. Visit the blank sitemap and then open the log file and look at the newest entries.

But even without doing that, I’m pretty sure with 20K posts you’re probably running out of PHP memory when generating the sitemap. I suggest to try the current development version which has a new option to split posts into yearly or even monthly sitemaps. This should greatly reduce the memory consumption on each sitemap creation.

Uninstall the current plugin. Then download http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/xml-sitemap-feed.zip and use the WordPress Plugins > Add new > Upload tab to install it. Then visit Settings > Reading and change the option “devide by” next to “Include post types: Posts” to “year” or (if that’s not enough) “month”.

Then refresh the main sitemap index http://www.soulculture.co.uk/sitemap.xml and notice there are (should be) multiple post sitemaps listed. Visit each one to see if they are not running into the memory limit anymore…

Let me know how it goes 🙂

By the way, the dev version includes pinging Google and Bing on each new post…

Same error here, site with more than 40k posts and ~70k tags. Some monthly archives return empty, even if split on month. Memory has been increased to 256, it would be ludicrous to increase it even more. So, any suggestions are appreciated.

    Hi M,

    Some monthly archives return empty,

Can you share a URL of your site (and which month to look at) so I can see the issue live? And how many posts do you have in those months that are returning an empty sitemap?

    Hi RavanH,

here are some of the empty month with their corresponding number of articles. Tags sitemap not working either. Do you split this one into parts as well? I’m asking because when you have 70k tags and 47~ posts performance is an issue.

    1750 arts. http://www.mediasinfo.ro/sitemap-posttype-post.20111.xml
1050 arts. http://www.mediasinfo.ro/sitemap-posttype-post.20124.xml [this one eats up the memory so it might not get generated anyway]

This is the tag sitemap which is invalid:

XML Parsing Error: no element found
    Location: http://www.mediasinfo.ro/sitemap-taxonomy-post_tag.xml
    Line Number 13, Column 1:

    Thanks for checking this.

Hi M, if you up the server PHP memory limit from 128 (as it is now, see the error on http://www.mediasinfo.ro/sitemap-posttype-post.20124.xml where 134217728 bytes equals 128 MB) to 256, how many ‘problem months’ are left?

Tags sitemaps are not split at the moment. I would have to do extra work for that… Which I might have time for before the next release but I cannot guarantee anything.

I generally advise against including a tags sitemap anyway. The benefits are usually just too small and you are taking a risk annoying the short-tempered spider. Or at least keeping him busy with indexing (and revisiting) these listing pages that do not really add great user value while you are clearly publishing new posts on an hourly basis which DO deserve priority.

Hi RavanaH, I am not able to increase the memory at this point.
Thank you for the recommendation about tags, I’ll keep it in mind!

Hi M, even though your sites size is an exception, I’ll be looking to further decrease memory consumption (if possible) for the next release.

    Thanks for reporting 🙂
