Errors When Trying To Update Plugins

Hello,

1. We developed this WordPress this summer that has had no issues until suddenly last week the client reported a “slowness” while working on the site.

2. Our first step to investigating was to update all plugins, and we discovered that suddenly none of the plugins will update through the dashboard. This was never an issue until last week, but now they all return errors. Here are some of the errors we get:

Update Failed: Download failed. cURL error 56: OpenSSL SSL_read: SSL_ERROR_SYSCALL, errno 104

Update Failed: Download failed. cURL error 7: Failed to connect to downloads.wordpress.org port 443: Connection timed out

– We are also periodically getting “1000 milliseconds timeout” errors when trying to update.

– Yoast SEO will also not connect anymore. It just says “Loading help center.” where the Yoast SEO content should be.

– FTP is now kicking us out if we try to upload files over a certain size limit. We did not have this issue ever before.

3. We have Googled the error and cannot find the first specific error exactly, but find similar error strings that reference it being related SSL, cURL, or memory issues, so we looked into all of those extensively and…

• The site does not have an SSL.
• We have spent somewhere between 10-12 hours on the phone with the hosting provider via multiple phone calls and have not been able to locate any issues. We have looked into PHP version(up to date at 7.1). They have looked into cURL, it is enabled with no errors. We looked into memory, upload max, etc, and everything has been upped an increased and isnot anywhere near being used up. The hosting plan has extra resources and there are no memory issues, the site is not even using 10% of CPU limits, bandwidth is below 10%… there is no “strain” on the server anywhere.

4. We have a large number of other clients on this same hosting provider, same hosting plan, all WordPress sites, all similar in themes, content, size, plugins, etc. and in 7 years of working on WordPress sites, we have never experienced any of these errors we are getting.

5. The same errors happen for everyone trying to work on the site – so 2 developers in California, and one in Florida all get the same issue. This negates computer issues, modem issues, and specific IP address issues (and we have confirmed with the hosting that our IPs are not blocked in any way).

We feel like everything we find in researching this tells us this is a hosting provider issue, but we’ve gone through everything with them. We also have a large number of clients on this host and no one else has this issue.

Honestly any direction in what this could be would be so appreciated.
