I am encountering a problem I have not experienced before in WP. I have quite a few installations of WP on various sites on my server. However when I went to update something today in the editor section, I got an error message –

    Not Acceptable

An appropriate representation of the requested resource /wp-admin/theme-editor.php could not be found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request

Can anyone explain what might be causing that? I have had WP installations for years on my sites on this same server and never seen that message before. Won’t seemingly let me change anything within editor

  • The Not Acceptable error you’re receiving is actually a 406 Not Acceptable error caused by mod_security.

mod_security is a module on your server that tries to prevent comment hack attempts. You can either have your host disable mod_security for you or you can try to find what is causing the error and remove it.

For example, whenever I have the word “tracert”, my software throws a 406 error because it sees tracert as a potential thread in the url.

Finding exactly what is causing the problem is sometimes easier said then done. If you contact your host, they may be able to review the server logs and possibly give you more details.

Thanks for your help Brad, I will put this to my host.
