Yesterday I updated Seo by yoast to the latest version and it’s giving me the following error message every time I save a draft post or update a post

Error Updating failed. Error message: the response is not a valid Json Reponse

It is a pink message that appears at the top of the content and only affects the editor Gutenberg (the classic one does not). I thought it was due to the WPQuads plugin because I updated it at the same time as seo by yoast and it’s solved by disabling it. But I also noticed that it’s solved by deactivating seo by yoast so I think there’s a compatibility problem between WPQuads and Seo By Yoast (if both are activated at the same time the pink sign is skipped). The strangest thing is that it only happens in 1 of my 7 webs but as I see this last update from Yoast is giving many errors and problems of JS, I attach a picture of the error, please fix it, it is very annoying. Thanks!

  • Hi @elevas33,

Sorry to see this error when you update posts. We’d like to get more information about this problem. To help us, please do the following steps:</p>

      1. Can you confirm that all your other plugins and themes are up-to-date? Does the error still appear after updating?

      2. Do any other error messages appear in the browser console when you view the edit screen? See how to check for JavaScript errors with your console.

      3. Check for conflicts by disabling all plugins and switching to a default WordPress theme like Twenty Nineteen. Does the error still appear?

1- Yes, all my plugins , themes and WordPress are updated.

2- I get an error in the chrome console but it’s a normal error that I get in all my web pages… just give me that message in this..

    https://ibb.co/z2mYgwR

3- It only works if I disconnect WpQuads or if I disconnect Seo by Yoast… but I can’t have WPQuads or Seo by Yoast at the same time…I have tried with several themes and I get the same error message from JSON has been when updating WPQuads and Seo By Yoast, if I disconnect one of the 2 is solved… both at the same time can not be active. It’s an incompatibility problem I don’t know which of the 2 plugins gives them… I also opened a thread in the WPQuads holder here https://wordpress.org/support/topic/error-updating-failed-error-message-the-response-is-not-a-valid-json-reponse/

    Thanks…

@elevas33 We tried to replicate the error by installing the WPQuads plugin, but were unable to. Can you please let us know whether that is the plugin you are using, or if you are using WP Quads Pro?

As for the ‘The response is not a valid JSON response.’ error, it can be caused by a number of different issues. If you temporarily disable the REST API: Head endpoint feature located under SEO>General>Features does it resolve the error?

We also checked for other possible causes and fixes for the error, and a large number of users reported that changing the permalinks settings resolved the error such as here: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/59009827/publishing-or-uploading-failed-error-message-the-response-is-not-a-valid-json

However, we don’t recommend altering your site’s permalink structure unless it’s to intentionally improve it. Also, changing the permalink structure on a site that has been around for a while can adversely affect the SEO in some cases. We have more information on this here: https://yoast.com/wordpress-seo-url-permalink/

Hi, first of all, thank you very much for your trouble. The plugin I use is normal WP Quads.

As for the ‘The answer is not a valid JSON answer’ I already made in a backup I have in local SEO> General> Features and change the permalinks to discard and does not solve the error.

Neither does changing my “Orbital” template to “Twenty Nineteen” solve it.

The problem is when I have updated the WPQuads plugin to the latest version and Seo By Yoast to version 14.7. If I disconnect one of the 2 plugins it doesn’t give me the error. I have also tested that if I go back to the previous version of WPQuads 2.0.9.1 everything works perfectly even with the last version of Seo By Yoast 14,7.

The problem of all this is that I have 7 webs and in all of them I use the same theme, configuration and template and it only happens in 1 of them… but it has been when I updated these 2 plugins.

I have left a record in the WPQuads thread here https://wordpress.org/support/topic/error-updating-failed-error-message-the-response-is-not-a-valid-json-reponse/

The template I use is “Orbital” (but not the template) and the plugins I use are the following, I attach a photo:

    https://ibb.co/mtrk73L

Anyway, reproducing this error is going to be impossible because, as I said, I have 7 websites with identical configuration and this problem only occurs in one of them…

    Thanks!!

@elevas33 Thanks for your reply. We tried checking the changelog to see if we could find anything that might account for the conflict with WPQuads but it doesn’t look like anything is listed after the 1.8.5 release: https://wpquads.com/changelog/

Were you able to test whether temporarily disabling the ‘REST API: Head endpoint’ feature had any impact on the error? The reason I mentioned it is in researching the error’s causes, one did mention it could sometimes be caused by issue related to REST.

    (@elevas33)

Hello again thanks, but I do not know what is or how to disconnect that, I have no knowledge of WordPress, could you tell me what it is? Anyway almost certainly is a problem of wpquads because if I go back to the previous version of wpquads works perfectly in both seo by yoast 14.7 as the previous version of seo by yoast. I wonder if I’ll get an answer in wpquads support too… Thanks for everything.

I just followed this tutorial to disable https://yoast.com/help/how-to-disable-or-enable-the-rest-api-endpoint-in-yoast-seo/ REST API endpoint in Yoast SEO and now it works perfectly and this error has been removed! But… what happens if I have it disabled ? something happens ? the pages are indexed worse or I will have some problem ? or is everything correct. Thank you very much!!

    Plugin Support devnihil

    (@devnihil)

@elevas33 Whereas we believe you are correct in that the issue is being caused by the recent update of WPQuads, we were recommending testing whether it resolved the error as it would be beneficial to the developers of WPQuads if the conflict that the recent update caused was related to.

You can temporarily disable the ‘REST API: Head endpoint’ in Yoast SEO by performing the following actions:

      • In WordPress, go to SEO>General>Features (tab)
      • Scroll down to ‘REST API: Head endpoint’ and click the ‘Off’ toggle
      • Click ‘Save Changes’

We aren’t recommend that you leave this feature disabled, but rather, disable it and then check whether the ‘the response is not a valid Json Reponse’ error still occurs when trying to update a page.

    Thread Starter Gruskel

    (@elevas33)

As I told you before I have disabled the REST API: Head endpoint and now the error message has disappeared and the message ‘the response is not a valid Json Reponse’ no longer appears when updating the page.So it’s not a good idea to leave it off?, thanks

    Plugin Support devnihil

    (@devnihil)

@elevas33 I apologize, I didn’t see your second reply back before I responded last.

As for disabling the Rest API, we don’t recommend this unless it’s necessary for a developer as the REST API is required for certain features of the plugin. We have more information on this in the following articles:

    https://yoast.com/help/how-to-disable-or-enable-the-rest-api-endpoint-in-yoast-seo/
    https://yoast.com/help/dont-see-yoast-internal-linking-metabox/

We were simply recommending to test this as it indicates more specifically where the nature of the conflict that the most recent update of the WPQuad plugin caused. We would recommend relaying this to the developers as it can help facilitate a bugfix for the issue in a future release.
