Support » Fixing WordPress » Error on database update

  • Hi!

I am working on fixing a website. The wp-admin was not accesible. So I disabled all the plugins. Prior to enabling them again, I updated first the WordPress version. And after this, it asks for a database update, and then it returns a critical error, and we can’t go any further. (Great mistake I thought there were server backups, but there aren’t any and I didn’t make one).

The front-page worked fine, if I enabled the theme and the plugins.

I checked the PHP version is 7.4. The plugins are all disabled from database, and I also changed the theme to twentytwentyone to test if the database update progress could work like that better.

I also cleaned the database from a lot of tables from old deleted plugins.

I can’t disclose the url, as this is from a customer.

Any ideas about what else can I do?

Errors like this are logged. Check the error log on your server. If you can’t find the log, please contact your host. Meantime, enable wp_debug and wp_debug_log and after an error, look at wp-content/debug.log to see if anything gets logged there. https://wordpress.org/support/article/debugging-in-wordpress/

    Thanks for the tips.

I checked the logs and found some things about the theme prior to changing it. But later nothing more. The console also shows nothing. I didn’t get to the debug option, I don’t use it often so I didn’t remember it.

By the way, I have white page on front end with the theme changed. I made a test copy of the site with the hosting function to try to solve it so I can make any change and the normal site front end is still running.

Another thing is that the update database appears everytime I go into wp-admin also not loged in.

I will speak with my customer because we thought it would be something quick to fix and it isn’t.
