Support » Requests and Feedback » Error in wp-admin/includes/template.php?

  • In the file wp-admin/includes/template.php, on lines 2426 and 2440, the protocol is incorrect, I believe.

    Wrong:
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"

    Should be:
    <html xmlns="https://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"

If I’m right, how/where do I report this so it can be corrected in the next version?

  • There is a redirect from http to https, so you end up in the same place.
    No big deal.

    Agreed. Not a big deal.

Just a very small error. Multiplied by 60 million or so.

w3.org made the effort to switch to https protocol. WordPress should reciprocate and support the push to https, and get their URL right.

Also, an easy fix. (Relatively speaking.) Just a single character on two lines of code. And no debate needed. It’s obvious that the change is the right one.

I still think I should pass this along to those preparing future versions of WordPress, but I don’t know the process for doing so.

Search here to see if it’s already reported. https://core.trac.wordpress.org/
    If not, write it up.

Looking at the URL, even though it redirects to https, it refers to http in its content. The other documents do also, when referencing the xmlns.
And, having an XML namespace on a HTML5 document doesn’t even make sense. It should probably be removed entirely, just as the conditional for IE8 should be removed since the browser support is for a minimum of IE11 for quite awhile now.

    Joy,

Thanks for looking into that a little more closely. Seems your observations were helpful. The core ticket is getting some attention and it looks like it will result in some cleaner code in WP 5.4!

To fix this, you need to check WordPress files and directory permissions and correct them if needed.
