Our development team has checked the issue and seems like this only occurs when the featured image is very large. When you set an image with smaller dimensions, the header image isn’t changed.
Please try to resize the featured image of the event which you are having problems with.
Also, the team notified, that this issue is not triggered by Event Calendar WD, since it does not touch the header of the page. It builds the content of the event inside the post container only.

It has something to do with your website theme, but in any case, we would not recommend having very large images on your site.
The large images a significant impact on the site speed.
