• Hi,

My company previously had a WordPress site but the domain expired (it was hosted on Godaddy but we used WordPress CMS to run it). I have since renewed the domain but the wordpress site is still inaccessible. I need some help getting back into it but I’m being met with this error message :

    “Error establishing a database connection
This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure the database server is running?”

Can I have some help resolving these issues please as I need to get this site back up and running.

I asked on wordpress.com but they couldn’t help as it’s not hosted there and they pointed me here. We had previously been running the site here using WordPress CMS :

    https://www.europeantourhospitality.com/wp-admin/profile.php

Is it possible to look into whether that historically used to be the case as the team here are saying they used to log into WordPress to make changes to the site previously.

    Thanks,
    Seb

  • Hi @smargolis! That’s brilliant news, glad to hear you managed to fix the database connection issues.

It sounds like the display issue you’re now seeing is because your site has defaulted to the Twenty Seventeen theme. Have you checked which themes you have available in Appearance > Themes (from the WordPress admin area)?

As your site has been restored from a previous state, you should have all the original themes listed here, and hopefully one of these is the one you’re looking for.

No and I have no idea and I can’t even log in using https://europeantourhospitality.com/wp/wp-login.php and nor can anyone in the team, is it possible to let us know what the accounts associated with this website were as at the moment we are all being met with “Unknown username. Check again or try your email address.”

Ah OK, I see. Unfortunately, we can’t check that information for you as you’re using the self-hosted version of WordPress, i.e. we can’t access your hosting.

You should be able to reset your password from the Log In page. Have you tried using the ‘Lost your Password?’ link? This is underneath the username and password fields. You’ll need to know an account username or email address for this to work.

If you can’t remember any usernames or email addresses, there are a couple of other ways you can reset your password. There’s a good list in this article here: https://wpbuffs.com/tips-and-tricks-to-recover-your-lost-wordpress-password/

I’d recommend first trying the ‘3. Reset via cPanel’ method, and if you have trouble with this try ‘4. Password Reset via FTP Using Functions.php File’.

Let me know if you need help with the suggestions in the article.
