Support » Localhost Installs » Error establishing a database connection

  • Hi
I am trying to install wordpress on the back of an installation of MAMP. I have followed the instructions at tutsplus to help guide the install.

My MAMP is up and running okay I think but when I try to link to

    http://localhost:8888/foldername/wp-admin/install.php

to get wordpress to install I get the following error:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can’t contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host’s database server is down.
→ •Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
→ •Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
→ •Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you’re unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

Any help much appreciated (I’m a novice at all this btw), thanks.

  • Is Your Database running (Can you see the “M” on the app icon)?
    If yes:
Did you enter the right database host, port, name, username and password?
The default settings of MAMP are:
    host: localhost
    port: 8889
database name: the one you created
    username: root
    password root
