• So I’m having this problem on a Spanish website where all of my letters with accent marks (á, é, í, ó, ú, ñ) appear incorrectly. For example, if you look at the example page I provided the link to, you’ll see that “años” is incorrectly displayed as “años”.

    Here’s a link to this screenshot: https://imgur.com/o9N6TV0

There are thousands of these errors on my website on almost every page and I don’t know what to do about them. I don’t have the time or patience to correct them all. I figure it’s probably a simple coding fix, but I really don’t know.

I’ve had both my hosting company and theme provider take a look at the problem and both have not been able to figure it out. My theme provider said “We suspect that it has something to do with the database and the way tables are encoded.”

Any help from any of you smart folks would be greatly appreciated!

It looks like it’s not breaking at the WordPress level, your encoding is right. The database encoding could very well be it. You might not be able to change this yourself. I’d contact your host and tell them the issue. I’ll bet it’s set to ASCII and needs to be UTF-8.

Thank you for the reply Topher. I really appreciate it. I’ll message my hosting provider back and let them know what you’ve said. Thanks!

@topher1kenobe Do you have any other ideas what might be causing this problem? I contacted my hosting and they say it is already set to UTF-8.

Maybe. I’ve experienced a scenario where the characters got corrupted, and then saved that way, so that when the storage was set back to the right character set, it was still broken, because it was just displaying saved “bad” characters.

Can you try changing them to be right and see if it saves properly?

Hi @topher1kenobe would you be able to explain this a bit more? I’m not sure what step to take next after reading your last message. I appreciate the reply.

In your screenshot it looks like a post title that has the issue. Can you edit that title and fix it and see what happens?

Yes, I can edit the title to fix the problem. However, this problem occurs on just about every page/post on my site. Ever since I restored the website this problem has existed, and it would take ages for me to go through and re-do all of these errors.
