 * Hello,
 * We’re getting the following error intermittently for different (legit) users.
   Seems maybe related to WF blocking somehow?
 * An error was encountered while trying to authenticate.
 * Any ideas?
 * Thanks!

 * Hi [@wpcsphil](https://wordpress.org/support/users/wpcsphil/), thanks for getting
   in touch.
 * Have you ever seen the issue for your own user, or just others? I have seen this
   problem when:
    - 2FA/reCAPTCHA is enabled and a custom or non-default login/registration page
      is being used.
    - The login page is being served via the www subdomain, but scripts and AJAX
      requests are using the non-www domain.
    - A minify/combine Javascript plugin is being used to optimize loading times.
 * Do you have any of these circumstances at all? If necessary, you could try disabling
   all plugins except for Wordfence and revert to a default theme such as Twenty
   Twenty-Five to see if the behavior stops, re-enabling your other plugins and
   theme one-by-one to see if it returns when a specific one is activated.
 * If none of that seems to help in diagnosing what’s happening, can you send a
   diagnostic report to **wftest @ wordfence . com**? You can find the link to do
   so at the top of the **Wordfence > Tools > Diagnostics** page. Then click on **“
   Send Report by Email”**. Please add your forum username where indicated and _respond
   here after you have sent it._
 * **NOTE:** It should look as follows – Screenshot of [Tools > Diagnostic > Send by Email](https://www.wordfence.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/diagnosticsendbyemail.png)
 * Thanks,
   Peter.

 * Thanks Peter!
 * The issue has happened intermittently for different users.
 * We do indeed have Nitropack installed on this site. Do you know of the specific
   steps/exclusions we should implement there to keep this issue from popping up?
 * I’ve sent the report as well.
 * Thanks again!

 * FYI we whitelisted their IP for now hopefully that helps.
 * Did you receive the report?
 * Thanks!

 * Hello,
 * Checking back in on this. Should be requesting support elsewhere? Client is getting
   upset with us.
 * Thanks!

 * Hi [@wpcsphil](https://wordpress.org/support/users/wpcsphil/),
 * My apologies, I did review your diagnostic. Can I just clarify if the clients
   that are experiencing the problem are using any of the “Client Login” services
   that are on subdomains of your site, and if so is there one in particular causing
   the authentication message to appear? If not, are the clients using the **/wp-
   admin** login page and experiencing this problem?
 * If you are indeed a Premium customer and are currently speaking with another
   support representative, feel free to answer these questions there (if they differ)
   as we can only support the free version here on the forums. Please by all means
   always reach out there first if you have a paid license.
 * I’m not fully familiar with Nitropack as we haven’t seen widespread issues with
   it, but did disabling it (and all other plugins except Wordfence) still cause
   the same issue to appear? If Wordfence is able to allow the clients to log in
   on its own, there certainly could be a conflict with another plugin’s settings.
 * Thanks again,
   Peter.
