I’m trying to get word press running on my new site on godaddy.com . I’m totally inexperienced with this stuff, so I have no clue what’s going on.

When I go to http://mysite.com/blog/wp-admin/install.php, I get this error:
    “500 – Internal server error.
There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed.”

I did everything I was supposed to do (I think). I downloaded the install file, unzipped it on my HD. Then I created a mySQL database using godaddy’s creation thing (I tried to use phpmyadmin, but godaddy’s phpmyadmin doesn’t seem to be the same as the one that the help file gave instructions for, and I’m pretty sure I successfully created a database). Then I modified the wp-config.php file as instructed and uploaded all my files via FTP to /blog/.

That was the first time I got this error. I tried changing some things in the config file. I added ?> to the end because that wasn’t in my original config file and somewhere in the help it said that it should end with that (maybe someone should fix that if that’s wrong in the sample config file?). I tried different values for the host name etc. I repeatedly modified the config file in different ways, deleted the old one and uploaded the new one and tried to run the install, but always got the same error.

Then I saw that if there was no config file it would try to configure things automatically, so I removed the config file. Same error. Then I deleted all the files and reuploaded and tried again. Same error.

Please help. I’m sure I’m doing something stupid.

  • Check for an .htaccess file in /blog/ and if there’s one, delete it. The dot in front of htaccess means it’s a normally invisible file, so be sure you can see all files with your ftp client of with GoDaddy’s file browser. Are you on windows or linux hosting?

    Thanks for responding.

I’m using windows. I don’t see htaccess. I can’t figure out how to see hidden files in godaddy, but I do have the ability to see hidden files on my computer, and there’s no htaccess in the folder that I uploaded from, so I don’t think it would be on the server unless godaddy put it there or something.

Reason I asked is that Windows servers are problematic, and there are lots of problems in these forums with GoDaddy’s windows hosting. Consider switching to linux; it appears to be fairly easy and takes 24 hours or so: Switching Your Hosting Account Operating System -GoDaddy Help Center.

Does this mean I need to use a linux PC or just change the server?

Using/running WordPress on a linux server has nothing to do with the end user’s PC, be it Windows, OS X or Linux. Even if you wanted to – in the future – develop locally for your wordpress on your local PC, that doesn’t matter, either.

    That worked. Thanks!

Glad that worked. If GoDaddy was able to change your server that fast, that’s good to know.
