 * Hi Guys,
 * Wondering if you can help.
 * I tried recently to make a back-up of site using FTP. I downloaded the files,
   scanned for viruses – which there were none and then re-uploaded.
 * After re-uploading however I get an HTTP ERROR 500, for both site and wp-admin
   page.
 * I contacted the host provider and they said it could be something wrong with
   script but didn’t specify.
 * Your advice and support is much appreciated.
 * Many thanks
    M Ati

 * Internal server errors (error 500) are often caused by plugin or theme function
   conflicts, so if you have access to your Dashboard, try deactivating all plugins.
   If you don’t have access to your Dashboard, try [manually resetting your plugins](https://wordpress.org/support/article/faq-troubleshooting/#how-to-deactivate-all-plugins-when-not-able-to-access-the-administrative-menus)(
   no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one
   individually until you find the cause.
 * If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the Twenty Nineteen theme
   to rule-out a theme-specific issue. If you don’t have access to your Dashboard,
   access your server via [SFTP or FTP](https://wordpress.org/support/article/ftp-clients/),
   or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel (consult your hosting
   provider’s documentation for specifics on these), navigate to /wp-content/themes/
   and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the
   default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue.
 * If that does not resolve the issue, it’s possible that a .htaccess rule could
   be the source of the problem. To check for this, access your server via SFTP
   or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and rename
   the .htaccess file. If you can’t find a .htaccess file, make sure that you have
   set your SFTP or FTP client to view invisible files.
 * If you weren’t able to resolve the issue by either resetting your plugins and
   theme or renaming your .htaccess file, we may be able to help, but we’ll need
   a more detailed error message. Internal server errors are usually described in
   more detail in the server error log. If you have access to your server error
   log, generate the error again, note the date and time, then immediately check
   your server error log for any errors that occurred during that specific time
   period. If you don’t have access to your server error log, ask your hosting provider
   to look for you.

 * Hi,
 * Thank you for the message. I thought I had replied but wasn’t logged in so it
   didn’t register.
 * It is both front and backend that are down at the moment.
 * I have tried renameing .htaccess and it didn’t work via live FTP.
 * I have attempted to delete and re-upload files, also renaming plugins.
 * The message from the host is there is error on this line.
 * **“[Wed Oct 16 02:14:11.423297 2019] [fcgid:warn] [pid 18190] [client 54.36.148.208:

 * Which version of PHP is the server running, and are you sure that `/htdocs/`
   is your web root?

 * You’ll need to contact your hosting provider’s support to determine what your
   web root directory is, if it’s not covered in the documentation.

 * The hosts replied that it could be error with wordpress version and php so they
   upgraded wordpress and said to enter admin area and uninstall plugins.
 * However I still cannot get into admin area.This is message on screen when trying
   to open admin area
 * **“W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please
   re-install plugin or remove /home/domains/vol2/872/1946872/user/htdocs/wp-content/
   advanced-cache.php.”
    “The site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please
   check your site admin email inbox for instructions.”

 * Okay great, I am having access to admin side.
 * However it is on recovery mode- I cannot change nor delete plugins.
 * I keep recieveing below message.
 * “W3 Total Cache Error: some files appear to be missing or out of place. Please
   re-install plugin or remove /home/domains/vol2/872/1946872/user/htdocs/wp-content/
   advanced-cache.php.”
 * If i delete plugins, which I believe the facebook importer was causing the issue–
   a plugin I downloaded but have not used and then re-upload the safe plugins,
   using wordpress – would that work?
 * Many thanks

 * Try deleting the W3 Total Cache plugin first, that appears to be the one causing
   the problem.

 * Thank you so much that is so helpful.
 * I did manage to get access to the admin side for while and I deactivated and
   deleted the plugins that i thought were suspected of bringing spam.
 * However I received alot of spam for the relatively short duration of the site
   reopening and so i changed the ht-docs rename whilst I ensure the plugins that
   was causing the failure were totally eliminated.
 * The affected plugins I think have been deleted – however i am attempting to reaccess
   the site and but no response.

 * Hm, you hadn’t mentioned spam before.
 * How exactly is that manifesting?

 * I have 16,003 comments and more everytime I open the site they get sent directly
   to my email.
 * I have closed the plugins and I still get messages.
 * I would sent you a screen shot but I don’t think you can on this forum

 * Well that’s just normal comment spam, like email spam, it doesn’t mean you’ve
   been hacked: [https://wordpress.org/support/article/comment-spam/](https://wordpress.org/support/article/comment-spam/)
 * You need an anti-spam plugin, like [https://wordpress.org/plugins/akismet/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/akismet/)
   or [https://wordpress.org/plugins/stop-spammer-registrations-plugin/](https://wordpress.org/plugins/stop-spammer-registrations-plugin/)

 * thank you – thats great – i just downloaded the second stop-spammers plugin.
 * I have been working through the plugins one by one – making good progress. site
   is starting to look like its former self
 * Images however arent reloading – i checked the uploads folder on the wp-content
   and all images seem to be on there, however not appearing on the site?
 * thanks

 * When you’ve got everything else to a relatively stable place, send over a link
   to a page where the images don’t work, and we can investigate a bit more directly.
   For now though, it could just be a symptom of the other instability.
