I see that a few people have had this problem so i've tried the fixes suggested but to no avial. So I'm really hoping that someone will be able to help.
This is what i've done so far:
FTP'd all contents of WP download into my root directory and then typed http://underwoodink.com/wp-admin/install.php
Then I I get file not found.
Then I tried moving all the files into a sub folder called wordpress and dis the same i.e. http://underwoodink.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php
I still get the same error.
I checked the WP requirements with mu host and they said they're fine.
Any ideas about what to do to fix this?

  2. When you're looking at your root with FTP, do you see all the wordpress files and directories? And it there an .htaccess file, either one you made or previsouly existing one?

@inkpot, if i try to open underwoodink.com and underwoodink.com/wordpress too, (not the install.php) it gives 404 not found. make sure your domain is added properly to the server

Thanks for the replies so far. When I go to ftp://www.underwoodink.com the files and directories are there.
There is a .htaccess file in my root folder.

  5. At this point, it's not a DNS or domain issue. Post the contents of your htaccess here. You can probably safely delete it, but let's see what's in it; I think it may be stopping your install by rewriting.

    Ok, this is it:

    DirectoryIndex index.htm default.asp default.aspx index.asp index.aspx index.cfm index.php index.htm index.html index.phtml
    CaseInsensitive On

  7. Looks like the problem. You're being redirected away from the install URL index.php. Rename .htaccess to htaccess (without the dot) and see if you can install.

Great. Thank-you - I'll try that when I get home tomorrow eve. Also, can I put WordPress in the root directory? I put it in a WordPress folder because I thought that this might solve the install problem.

  9. You can put it in root. The zip file extracts in a folder called wordpress, but you can take all the files out if you want. You're on a Windows server, according to the htaccess file, so check your host to be sure you have mysql and php.

I just had a go with this but I'm still getting the Error 404. Any ideas? My host who uplinkearth say that they meet the requirements for a WordPress install but maybe they don't. Are there any other possibilities?

  11. Uplinkearth shows nothing at all in their support faqs re: wordpress, and they're windows hosting, too. If uplinkearth isn't helpful, I'd try another host: these two are recommended by others in these forums. Get Linux hosting; it's really the best for wordpress.

Great - thanks again for your help. I'll give them a chance tomorrow and then if I get no joy I'll get a new host.
