entry for a page in db

    I made an entry for a page directly in the DB in wp_posts and wp_postmeta. The page showed up in the backend but not in the frontend. only after saving in the backend it showed up in the frontend. A look into wp_postmeta showed that it added a value for _edit_lock. How is that value generated and what is its function? Is it possible to make an entry in the DB and let that page show up in the frontend without having to save it before in the backend?
