Support » Plugin: Wordfence Security » Ended 500 errors on our web hosting account

  • In the past, we used a plugin which renamed wp-login.php for many years.

However, over time, we found it wasn’t worth the headaches that disconnecting the regular login processes causes. In addition, that didn’t stop the performance problems — many 500-level errors (“server too busy”) per day — on our good-but-shared web hosting accounts. Plus, the attacks accessed login capability through other means, and meanwhile, every attack took a toll on our performance.

After recently loading WordFence, however, and increasing the blocking time from 5 minutes to 5 days or longer — and permanently blocking egregious hackers via cPanel — our sites’ performance is excellent, after years of troubles and struggles to enhance performance, with limited improvement.

We have considered getting the pro version of WordFence, because if we could block our (English-language) websites from Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey, about 90% of the hacking attempts would be stopped before they ever happened. However, for us, the pricing is prohibitive. We may ask our webhosting company to help block those countries via .htaccess in the future. Regardless, we’re still really grateful for the lite version of WordFence.
