    My initial thought is because the “ceteris paribus,” text is wrapped in an <em></em> tag followed by the <sup></sup> tag. The browser probably decides since those are separate elements they can wrap.

    Could you try making sure the <sup> in included in that tag and see if that helps? or maybe put it before the comma?

    Hi, I put the footnote inside the italics section, and comma outside. Still the same issue appearing. This is what my wp block html shows:

    Thus rising prices, <em>ceteris paribus[note]Other things being equal[/note]</em>,

    You could try wrapping your string with <span style="white-space: nowrap"></span> to force it not to wrap with whitepace. Or just add style="white-space: nowrap" to your <em> so it looks like this.

    Thus rising prices, <em style="white-space: nowrap">ceteris paribus[note]Other things being equal[/note]</em>,
