Support » Installing WordPress » $end error, parse error – general novice confusion on installation

  • Hi,

First time website creator here so please bear with me!

I’ve been struggling to install WordPress 2.7.1.

I downloaded, then extracted the files, and uploaded them to my host. I used Frontpage 2003 for this which seems to to FTP with ASCII as requested.

I was able to log in after changing wp-config.php, and set things up, but haven’t been able to get there since.

The first error I get is:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected $end in /homepages/26/d252183367/htdocs/wordpress/wordpress/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 166

If I delete that line it finds errors elsewhere. I’ve tried reuploading the files and get stuck at the same points.

Am I missing something obvious here?

    Many thanks,

  • Hey Mark,

So it installed properly, you were able to log in and configure stuff, and now it has a problem? It might be one of the values you used in configuring the backend, I see you have /htdocs/wordpress/wordpress/ which looks odd. /htdocs/wordpress/ sure, or better yet /htdocs/ if you’re not using subdomains…

If it is a wonky database value, you could try the install again with a new database (delete the old one later)…

    Hi musnake,

    Thanks for your reply.

I was able to get as far as the first menu in which you name the blog and create admin user data, and got the email which says that the new blog has been created. The link from that email won’t let me log in, and going direct to the link doesn’t help either. That’s where I’m getting these error messages.

The reason the directories are a bit funny was because I wanted the WordPress files well away from my existing site content while I set things up and got it looking right.

    Hey Mark,

Ok so the good news is that you got the database side of the install working just fine.

I think it’s the path that’s throwing it off. You want a deeply nested path wp/wp/ so you need to have that path reflected everywhere.

Are you certain that during the install you specified everywhere? Is that what you see in your file?

Have you tried FTP’ing the entire folder again?

    Hi Musnake,

Thanks for taking the time to give me some ideas – it’s much appreciated.

I’ve gone back to square one here.

Deleted, re-extracted, reuploaded to (one fewer wordpresses this time!)

The install.php isn’t starting – the error message here is:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘}’, expecting ‘)’ in /homepages/26/d252183367/htdocs/wordpress/wp-includes/formatting.php on line 167

This is the original problem I had before. It might be heresy, but the way I got rid of this last time was simply to delete that line of code! I think it created a couple of similar difficulties elsewhere, but eventually I could log in, and ran the install. When I then went to log-on again, I had no further luck.

Maybe I’m missing something very obvious?

I’ll keep racking my brains, but would be grateful for any more thoughts!

    Hey Mark,

The unexpected ‘}’ error is usually because one of the requisite files did not get uploaded/uploaded completely… One of the files, or files that hold a function that formatting.php uses. Try uploading the wp-admin folder again.

    What is in ?

    Hi musnake,

Thanks for getting in touch. I’ve been working away at this, and I think you’re spot on. I was suspicious about transferring the files via MS Frontpage – it did say ASCII transfer, but it’s old technology now (one of many reasons for switching over to WP!).

So I downloaded FireFTP on firefox and uploaded the WP files again, and I can get in and have been able to edit things, which is great.

Only trouble now is the grief my theme is giving me! I’ve posted in the other forum, but it seems to be causing lovely error messages of this nature all over the place:

Warning: Cannot modify header information – headers already sent by (output started at /homepages/26/d252183367/htdocs/wp-content/themes/start-news/functions.php:333) in /homepages/26/d252183367/htdocs/wp-includes/pluggable.php on line 850

My first feelings on wordpress are that it’s absolutely brilliant but potentially very frustrating for a novice!

    Thanks for all your help,
