Enable Use of www and normal domain for WordPress Multisite (4 posts)

This topic has been danced around multiple times on the forum but I couldn't find a clear answer to getting this to work.

I'm using Donncha's domain mapping plugin. My primary domain in the plugin is suzyberberianweddings.com. I would like http://www.suzyberberianweddings.com to resolve to the same site.

Currently when you visit the www version the browser says the site does not exist.

I've tried to just add the www version of the domain in the plugin and not mark it as primary but this doesn't work.

The domain is registered with godaddy.

Currently there is one a record pointing at my ip.

There is a cname record www which just points to @.

    Thanks for the help.

If you have the DNS and server set up properly for http://www.suzyberberianweddings.com/ domain, the domain mapping plugin will pick that up and send it to http://suzyberberianweddings.com/ (assuming you have that mapped).

You don't need to add the second mapping. In the webserver config you need to make the www version of the domain an alias (parking in cPanel) of your WP install's domain.

    Thanks for the advice.

After doing some more investigating I believe that the dns was not refreshed by the webhost - so I manually refreshed and am now waiting for propagation to occur. I'll post back the results.

I was correct in that the dns was not refreshed by the webhost (Dreamhost)

Once I manually refreshed the dns through their control panel the site was working great after a bit of propagation time.

Like Ron said I did not need the additional domain mapped in the plugin.

For anybody else that might come across this scenario I have the "a" record pointing to my main ip that WordPress multisite is installed to, and the "www" cname record pointing to @.
