Enable TinyMCE on Excerpt

  • Hello All,

I need a plugin that would enable the TinyMCE editor in the Excerpt box. Also, It would be great if this plugin had the capability to enable the existing-but-hidden excerpt field on pages.

The reason I need this is: Because I’m designing a site that will use WordPress as CMS in which each page is going to have separate content in the sidebar, so, by calling the excerpt on the sidebar and having TinyMCE enabled on the excerpt box, the client would have a “WYSIWYG” option to edit the content of the sidebar.

I’ve already accomplished this functionality (I’ve enabled the excerpt box on the “Write/Edit Page” screen, enabled TinyMCE on the excerpt box for both pages and posts and forced it to maintain formatting when saving), but I’m no PHP wiz, nor know what kind of data would corrupt the MySQL database; not to mention the fact that, since I accomplished this by modifying WordPress core files, I’ll have to go in and repeat the mods every time I upgrade it. That’s why I think a plugin would be way better.

    Any suggestions?

    – Thanks in advance.

  • Another solution to this would be the ability to add an extra field to the edit_post / edit_page screen, which is TinyMCE enabled and records its input into a database table. We would also have to create a function to be able to call it from the template. Any thoughts?

Might be a bit late for you, three months on and all, but I’ve just written a plugin to do this:

    TinyMCE Excerpt

Hope it helps. Any feedback welcome at the above link.

Thanks a lot for your reply Simon; I’ll check it out.
