    Hello,
How can I let the Seo Manager user role edit the robots.txt file?
The File editor link is not showing to user roles Seo manager and Seo editor. As administrator, the file editor and robots.txt file is shown correctly.
    Thanks.

    Hi @dongreen

We understand you’ve set a role of SEO manager to one of your users and want them to be able to access the SEO > Tools > File Editor in order to access and edit the robots.txt file. You’ll have to customize their role and permissions by following the suggestions here – https://yoast.com/seo-roles/

    Thank you for your reply.

So Seo managers are not supposed/allowed to edit robots.txt file without heavy modifications to user roles?

    Hi @dongreen

Yes, by default, access to the File Editor and the robots.txt file would best be suited for the administrators of the website. Incorrectly modifying the robots.txt file could cause issues where the crawlers and bots would be unable to access your website – https://yoast.com/ultimate-guide-robots-txt/

    Ok i get it thanks.
Can I add the permission to seo manager to edit robots.txt manually with code? could you kindly supply a snippet for that?
    Thanks.

    Hi,

With your administrator access, are you able to view the ‘file editor’ under SEO > Tools?

If the robots.txt file is not writable or your WordPress install has disabled file editing, creating or editing robots.txt through the WordPress Dashboard may fail. In that case, you can edit at the server level. You can learn more about it here – https://yoast.com/help/how-to-edit-robots-txt-through-yoast-seo/#server

You may have to check if you have the correct permissions for file editing. As for assistance with the capabilities with the SEO manager, you may have to customize it using the plugin or custom code as stated here – https://yoast.com/seo-roles/

Yes, as administrator i can access the file editor and the robots.txt file.
Need to add the same for seo manager.
If you can share the code to do it that will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi @dongreen

Unfortunately, this is outside our scope of support. We wouldn’t want to suggest incorrect code and risk it accidentally breaking your website. You can check out some examples here and learn more about roles here. Or use a plugin such as the User Role Editor plugin.
