Support » Everything else WordPress » Empty iframes created in Text editor when switching from Visual mode

  • I’ve noticed a lot of empty iframes creating extra white space at the bottom of posts and pages on five different sites in the last week. It looks like this in the text editor:

    <iframe style="display: none;"></iframe>

    <iframe style="display: none;"></iframe>

    <iframe style="display: none;"></iframe>

    <iframe style="display: none;"></iframe>

    <iframe style="display: none;"></iframe>

    <iframe style="display: none;"></iframe>

I just checked another site where there were no iframes in the page. When I switched from Visual to Text editor, a brand new empty iframe suddenly appeared.

What is causing this? These are sites I built using the Genesis framework, and this problem is new, I’ve never seen it in any of these client sites before the last couple of weeks.

  • You can use the Health Check plugin in Troubleshoot mode to disable plugins/theme for your user only, so you can isolate the cause.

@joyously Already done – nothing found.

I just checked three other client sites that I did not build, each with a different mix of plugins and a different theme, and when I switch from Visual to Editor tab, they also have the same empty iframe tags.

    This is a test.

    <iframe style=”display: none;”></iframe>

Do you have a browser extension that could be adding it?
Is this in Classic Editor or block editor?
Are all these sites on the same version of WP?

It’s in Classic Editor, on all the sites. They are all on WP 5.7.

No browser extension – it happens in Chrome and FF.

One colleague reports she just noticed the same thing happening, I think she’s using Astra. I’m using custom Genesis child themes.

I am unable to reproduce this. Are you sure you tested with Health Check disabling all plugins/theme? (well, except Classic Editor) What version of Classic Editor is installed?

This is almost certainly some browser extension.

Try using the site in “incognito mode”. You will need to log in to it again, but this mode disables extensions temporarily, so it’s a good way to test.

I think you’re right – I think it’s AdBlock. I’ve removed this Chrome extension and the problem seems to have stopped for now.

However, my colleague who sees it happening is not using AdBlock. So still some mystery here.
