Support » Fixing WordPress » Employee set up website on .com instead of .org

We had an employee setup our company website on .com instead of .org with the help of a web designer that also hosts our website. Then she left. The hosting company response times are terrible. We have paid for their hosting services until November. I don’t have any experience with WordPress. I now have control over our website domain names. What steps do I need to do to get our company website setup on the .org instead of .com. We are currently on WordPress 5.6.2. Do I need to install a program on my PC to access these files. I keep seeing CPanel but we are non-profit and i’m not sure if it would be worth it. Are there any free options?
I would like to start backing up the website. It’s basically static but I’m going to need those files when we move the site elsewhere.

Sorry if I left out info. Not sure what to put in here.

  • Hi, @refreshrate

The suggestion @proto57 offered is indeed awesome, but reading your post, it might seem that it’s not your case.

If I understood right, you now have a site example.com and you want example.org

The domain name is different from the hosting solution. A very common confusion here is that people confuse their site being hosted at WordPress.com and their site using WordPress.org software and being hosted somewhere else.

I think you are using WordPress.org software and are hosted on a server. Right?

In order to change your domain (site address)
    from .com to .org:
    1. You need to buy example.org domain (and make sure you don’t renew example.com anymore – I don’t think there is a way to refund that, but ask them – the place you bought the domain)

    2. Then you have to contact your host and ask them to link the new domain to your server. You also have to change DNS values in your control panel from the domain seller to point to your server.

I keep seeing CPanel but we are non-profit and i’m not sure if it would be worth it. Are there any free options?

cPanel is a free administration panel provided by your host. You should have access to it. Some hosts don’t use it, but they use other administration panels. Ask them.

The hosting company response times are terrible.

Unfortunately it’s them you should contact first. You may be able to buy the domain from them as well and then they do the domain-server linking thing.

You can use the free version of this plugin to backup your site: https://wordpress.org/plugins/updraftplus/

I use it for all of my site and it works great. No need for cPanel access. Just Dashboard access.

    Hope this helps,
    Kind regards.

Thank you for your responses. Our contract IT company took care of the problem. Unfortunately, I don’t what they. I checked one day and it was fixed.

Glad it’s fixed. Most probably they did the steps above or something similar.
    Regards!
