Emails to confirm subscription being sent to deleted addresses

Hi there @mattyrob (are you still there, you are no longer responding to questions? Perhaps you are based in Ukraine or Russia. 🤨)

The plugin is sending out emails to confirm their subscriptions to people who are not even on any list. This is, of course, triggering complaints, and I am having my email account affected by this.

I hope you are around and can help, otherwise I will have to start thinking of some other solution to subscriptions to my blog.
